Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is using the psychotherapeutic use of movement to assist in helping an individual’s health and well-being. Dance/movement therapy promotes emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration. DMT encourages the use of the mind, body, and spirit as they are an interconnected system. This nonverbal, movement-based approach is used as a form of communication, expression, development, and functionality.
Dance/Movement Therapy can be done individually or in a group setting. Dance/Movement therapists observe movements, assess and analyze, and intervene during the session. This form of improvisational movement promotes self-awareness, self-esteem, and emotional expression. Dance/movement therapists strongly believe that nonverbal communication is just as important as verbal language, in which they use both during the therapeutic process.
